Zoetrope

The zoetrope film technique involves a cylindrical device with a series of sequential images placed on the inner surface, which creates the illusion of motion when spun rapidly. As the viewer looks through the slits on the side of the zoetrope and the images pass by, persistence of vision causes the images to blend together, resulting in the perception of a moving image.

Phenakistiscope

The pioneering animation device that introduced the illusion of motion. Recognized as an early form of moving media entertainment, it played a pivotal role in shaping the future of the motion picture and film industry. Comparable to a GIF animation, it could display only a brief, continuous loop.
